South London Arts Partnership Street Arts Academy

The South London Arts Partnership and EEA are proud to present the Street Arts Academy’s new touring street arts show ‘Elemental’. Devised and performed by the young people, ‘Elemental’ encompasses a range of art forms...dance, drama, percussion, rap and carnival.

The show explores our relationships with the natural world through character, movement, sound and visuals, creating moments of intimacy and spectacle, improvisation and choreography. It will be performed in a variety of public places, bringing them to life in colourful, dynamic and unexpected ways.

Look out for Air, Fire, Water and Earth as they promenade throughout the day, performing to, and interacting with the public. Discover what happens when the elements combine and react together and join them as they process throughout the festival, heralding the power of the natural world.

Between May - July 2008 there will be 8 performances across South London, leading up to performances during the Cultural Oympiad:

History
The Street Arts Academy is an exciting project that unites young people and schools from eight London Boroughs in the lead up to the Olympics.  The Academy is the joint initiative of the London Boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Kingston, Merton, Richmond and Sutton , run by Emergency Exit Arts and supported by the Arts Council England.

During the first phase of the project 6 schools experienced taster sessions to recruit young people. The scheme is now running across 8 London Boroughs where 180 young people aged 13-16 are experiencing a variety of skills including:

• Improvisation

• Devising

• Fabrication and Animation

• Character and clowning
• Physical theatre and dance

• Vocal technique

• Percussion

2007
In 2007 the Street Arts Academy near the South Bank in London brought a group of fifteen dedicated young people together to devise and create a show, ‘The Carnival of Curiosities!', that amazed and amused a passing audience in high streets and parks in the original six boroughs.

SLAP had a successful residency in Waterloo, working with 20 14-15 year old participants over Easter 2007. They also went to the Street Arts confernce in Brighton to see professional street artists at work.
