Next Stop 2012

EEA will be working with The Gateway Boroughs, Thames Gateway London Partnership, LDA, Arts Council England, The Sports Council and CLG to deliver Next Stop 2012, a participatory arts programme to mark the commencement of the British leg of The Olympic Games.

The programme will embody the spirit of ‘The Games’ and performances will be showcased at cultural events in each of the 5 boroughs:

Lewisham 12 July 2008
Lewisham’s People’s Day will be kick starting the launch of the London Olympics with a spectacular event on Saturday 12 July 2008.  Lewisham will be hosting Splash, the Water Carnival, led by teams of young masqueraders from local schools and sports groups, dancers, youth theatres and musicians from Lewisham’s diverse communities.  The Carnival procession will wind its way around Mountsfield Park at 4.00pm but everyone will have the opportunity to take part in the fun with arts and crafts workshops throughout the afternoon.   The procession will end with a finale Splash that will be out of this world with a giant fiery Phoenix bird, dolphin mascots and the unveiling of a gigantic fountain of wishes!

The project has been devised and produced by Emergency Exit Arts, the UK’s leading exponent of the Art of Celebration.  The project is part of Next Stop 2012, funded by Thames Gateway. Splash, the Water Carnival project is supported by Lewisham Council, Greenwich and Lewisham Young People’s Theatre, Lewisham Youth Theatre. Lewisham Music Service, the Saxon Crown Swimming Club, Launcelot Primary School and Marvels Lane Primary School and the Green Chain Walk.
