Platform 11+

Emergency Exit Arts and Pilot Theatre, based in York are British partners in a Pan European arts partnership funded by the European Union Culture Programme. One of only nine successful applications to the scheme, the €2 million project, entitled Platform 11+, is an innovative programme of participatory projects, conferences, festivals, training and seminars.

Together with 11 other partners from across Europe we will present a many layered portrait of a young European generation between the ages of 11-15. Visual arts exhibitions, outdoor events and theatre commissions will be inspired by young people’s views, experiences and imaginations over four years, commencing in 2009.

EEA Project Director, Andrew Siddall, is taking a lead on the visual arts aspects of the project and Artistic Director, Deb Mullins, is a part of the Advisory Board. Since the project has started EEA has:

  • Participated in the 2009 in Budapest gathering where EEA presented a street theatre piece for over 300 young people as part of a site specific event in a school playground.
  • Worked with Lewisham Youth Theatre, to commission writer, Arjunan Manuelpillai, to write a youth theatre piece which was presented by youth theatre members in March 2010
  • Hosted the March 2010 Advisory Board Meeting as part of EEA’s 30th Birthday celebrations
  • worked on an arts installation in Portugal in June 2010

As a network of 13 equally-participating theatres from 12 countries and in connection with local cultural organizations, universities and schools, its goal is to initiate multidisciplinary cultural efforts (literature, performing and visual arts, new media, cultural education) for and among youth aged 11-15.
