A World of Carnival Newham Carnival

8 July

Britain has a long tradition of carnival originating from many different cultures from all over the world. Newham has a wonderfully diverse mix of these cultures and in 2017 we will bring A World of Carnivals to the streets of east London.

We will take you on a journey over land and sea to join some of the most famous carnivals on earth including the distinctive flavours of Trinidad, New Orleans Mardi Gras, Venice and Rio. See Trinidadian Mas characters: the ‘midnight robbers’, ‘burrokeets’ and ‘sailors’ dance to calypso and soca music. Hear New Orleans style brass bands, with kings, cooks and fire torches. Be amazed by Venice style ornate and elaborate masks modelled by young performers as they honour the history of the spice trade from the east to Venice and Europe. Be thrilled by our Amazon rainforest with exotic dancers and a barrage of samba drummers inspired by Brazilian carnival in Rio.
