Summer 2010

Exciting Summer Schools for children and young people across London - your chance to get involved!

Street Dance Summer School
From 3rd - 6th August 2010 The Street Arts Academy will be running Street Dance workshops at the Phipps Bridge Youth Centre ,  Merton. Workshops, designed in consultation with our youth panel, will introduce participants to Street Arts through the medium of dance. Participants will explore their responses to their local built environment and community through site specific based workshops - documenting their work through film and online blogs. EEA has been working closely with youth workers and London Borough Merton Council to develop a project that is responsive to local young people's needs and hope that it may be the beginning of ongoing work in the area.

Street Arts Academy
From 16th - 20th August 2010 we will be working in partnership with the Imperial War Museum, Southwark Theatre Education Partnership, London Borough Southwark Council and South London Arts Partnership to deliver the fourth annual Street Arts Academy Summer School. Working with 13-19 year olds from across South London, the project explores social history and conflict resolution through the medium of Street Arts.
Participants will have the opportunity to work with professional artists to devise and perform their own street performance to be premiered at The Mayor's Thames Festival on Sunday 12th September.
Participants will be exploring ensemble/ team work/ collaboration/ devising / clowning/ writing for performance/ directing/ costume design/ masquerade/  physical theatre/ mime/ street theatre/ museum object analysis/ exploration of conflict resolution / history of street theatre, political protest and campaigns.

Carnival Camp
From16th - 20th August EEA will be based at Fairkytes Arts Centre in Romford to deliver a week of Carnival Workshops in partnership with Grand Union Orchestra in the lead up to Romfest World Carnival at the end of September. Participants will have the opportunity to design and create carnival costumes, mobile art works, chants and carnival music to dazzle their local community as part of the celebrations.

Transformation in Greenwich
From 23rd - 27th August EEA will be based at Kidbrooke Secondary School where we will be delivering our Transition Summer School, commissioned by Kidbrooke and Thomas Tallis Secondary Schools. The Summer School is open to year 7 pupils from both schools and any year 6's who will be joining them from their feeder schools in September 2010.
This year the summer school will be set in 2075, at a time when our resources have run low and the only materials available for creating art are recycled.
We have been working with local businesses and schools to collect plastic bottles, food containers, plastic bags and other recycled delights for them to use during the week. Exploring recycled materials as a metaphor for the individual's power to instigate change, the week’s activities will involve giant puppet making, costume design and fabrication, street performance, musical instrument construction and plenty more.
The week has been co-authored by young consultants from both secondary schools; they have been documenting their experiences so far on their new blog.
